Secret supper clubs in London

moove2london on 25 Nov 2009

Secret Supper Clubs in London are becoming the new rage. If you’ve recently moved to London, then from a social point of view they’re a great activity to either take part in, or even better, to hold your own.
If you’ve no idea what I’m talking about, then let me fill you in.

Secret supper clubs are like a cross between a restaurant and a dinner party. They take place in someone’s home, much like a dinner party, but money does exchange hands, much like a restaurant.

However, the question as to whether this is a strictly legal venture, seems to be a blurry subject at present. Many supper clubs operate a ‘bring your own booze’ policy, so they don’t get into trouble for not having a licence to sell alcohol. Other supper clubs request a minimum donation of a certain amount of money to cover food costs.

Anyway, getting past the legalities of this alternative dining experience, you should expect to turn up to someone’s house, which could be anything from a posh mews property to a tower-block council flat. You will be met by the all-in-one host, waitress, chef and maitre d’ and be introduced to your co-diners for the evening. You’ll chat to really interesting people from all walks of life and unlike the ‘normal’ restaurant, where you can remain reasonably anonymous, at a supper club, you’re actively encouraged to interact with the other diners, often by taking part in some light dinner party entertainment. A supper club is certainly the type of occasion you could go to by yourself, whereas in a restaurant you might feel uncomfortable sitting by yourself.

Some of these supper clubs have become quite famous and renowned for serving beautiful food, even though the organizers/homeowners/chefs keep themselves from being identified by using names such as ‘Marmite Lover’.

Here are some of the most popular ‘secret’ supper clubs in London that we’re currently aware of and ways in which to book a place at the next one. Some, rely on social networking sites such as Facebook to spread the word and communicate with potential diners.
