Getting a National Insurance Number for Working in London
moove2london on 07 Oct 2009If you’re moving to London (or elsewhere in the UK) from abroad, you’ll need to apply immediately for a National Insurance (NI) number and pay contributions like other people who normally live and work here.
In order to get a NI number, you’ll need to speak to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) who are available on +44 (0) 845 600 0643. They’ll arrange an interview for you at a JobPlus Centre. This can be quite a lengthy procedure and you do really need to be resident in the UK, before they’ll grant you a number.
There are 2 scenarios. First, you start working without a NI number (although most employers would insist that you have one) and then your boss/HR department can write a letter on your behalf, stating that you’re in employment. You would take this letter to your interview. During this time, you’ll be charged an emergency rate of tax by the Inland Revenue (high rate) and can apply for a rebate at a later date.
Alternatively, you can apply for a NI number, whilst you’re actively seeking employment. You should request a ‘proof of seeking employment’ letter from any recruitment agencies that you register with. Or, if you apply for any jobs and get any ‘rejection’ letters through the post, you can take this along to your interview as proof too. Once you have enough proof that you’re actively seeking employment, then you’ll be able to arrange your interview. Speak to the DWP on the above number, or take a look at the DWP’s website for further details.
